I’m sorry for your car. It’s hard to change cars, even with the inconvénient ones. I was so surprised to hear that they sell the Yaris in the US. Here in France, I have one too, circa 2011, 4 doors, but otherwise no frills. I figured that they couldnt have a market for it in the US. For driving the narrow medieval streets in my French town, it can’t be beat! Even if I can’t charge my phone in it and havent used the CD player since 2015. I know my next car will be electric (and expensive) so I cling to every last moment that I have with my little Yaris.
I loved this post and I don't even have a car. In fact, I never learned to drive and I'm 49 thank you very MUCH. But that "letting go" feeling, oh man...
Now, those Strokes CDs should have never been there.
My wife and I also live in Western Massachusetts, and the only good spots to park our cars are under pine trees. I just noticed the sap has started to drip again. One year the inspector would not pass my car because there was too much "pine piss" on the windshield (his words). Good to know it's not just us dealing with this problem. Sounds like your car was a "good egg."
Finding an inexpensive new car, in hatchback form, with a manual is damn near impossible now. CARMAX might be worth a look for a used but nearly new, vehicle. I recently bought my daughter a 2023 Subaru Forester, not manual, and they were very professional and the buying experience was relatively hassle free. Thank you! Great story, as always!
From start to finish this story intrigued me . The royalty checks were funny 😂I would come to an art gallery with them all displayed, whatever a commentary it is on. And I can’t wait for you to have new experiences in your next vehicle, new passengers and destinations. 💕I’ll be sure to tune in to your posts
The condo unit I rent had reached a similar point of dilapidation that I wasn't even trying to keep it tidy. 20 year old carpet, seems exposed that created a hazard to cut oneself.
Fortunately, with my partner moving in (later this month!) my landlord/sister agreed to do some renovations. Tore out the carpet and replaced it with a nice, light "luxury vinyl" that's much better suited for my "lifestyle." (This is a nicer way of saying that autism manifests in my family as a lack of coordination so profound that, the first time I saw the Three Stooges, I thought it was a documentary. Many, many stories of how we've injured ourselves in ways that seem like they should only happen in slapstick comedy.)
this sounds like i could have written it about my 2010 nissan versa hatchback, manual transmission and window rolling and no-aux in the stereo and all. my kids went from toddlers to youngsters in that car. what a great car! then a deer sealed it's fate, hit us broadside on the interstate at 11pm, causing the hood to come unlatched and slam into the windshield as we 360'ed across the asphalt and eventually came to a stop in the median against the steel cable divider. it was wicked, and what a rush! but that spelled the end. i think i paid $11,000 brand new for that car. we'll never see the likes of that pricing ever again, i fear.
great story, juliana. i love the sentimentality of it all.
Funny, I drove a white Echo for 20 years. Base with stick, too. A true egg. My lawyer friend Andrew, who drove a Lexus, called it an "echo of a car" and he's not wrong. The car's still on the road with someone I'm sure
I used to own an egg as well. I had a white 2-door Yaris with a CD player (that often played your albums), although mine was an automatic. Like you, I drove it until the point where I donated it to charity. I upgraded to a Prius hybrid that will hopefully be my car until I can't drive anymore. With no CD player I now stream music in the car, so maybe a penny or two of your streaming income is due to me.

You look like you should be driving a Lincoln- you’ve got class!
The part where you see the car rolling outside with your dog had me laugh out loud, thanks for that! Enjoy your daily life writings
I have a 2015 Honda fit- stick shift(of course). If you're looking... Can't go wrong with a Honda fit : )
Still driving my 2008 Fit!
The fact remains you didn’t stay too long …

It wasn't Bang & Olafsen or anything like that but the factory sound system in that car somehow was kickass
Farewell, old egg! Thank you for sharing this excellent true story. My sister got one of those new EV Volkswagen vans. There’s quite a learning curve.

Thanks for mentioning the NPR tow truck! With love.
