Left turns against oncoming traffic, when a well-meaning driver motions you through, seem particularly hazardous. I totalled my car in a similar situation a few years ago and am glad I’m still alive. I tried to drive using only right turns for a while after that, but returned to my old ways soon afterwards, albeit with extra caution. I am glad your collision had a good outcome - sounds quite scary

It reminds me of an accident I had in my 1967 VW camper van. The light turned green and I went forward. To my left I see a flash of a white car crossing my path. I remember a dark haired girl laughing in the passenger seat. Plow! I was knocked out briefly. When I came to my glasses were in the ground, my vision feeling like I was walking at the bottom of a swimming pool. All cars were stopped at the intersection. I started my car and pulled into the mall parking lot. The card drove off. Not one person tried to see I was alright. One guy checked on me but said he didn't want you get involved. I had a massive egg on the left corner of the wall. The right side of the split window was smashed. The other car was long gone. My final conclusion is don't trust the world.

I had an almost identical accident while riding my bike out of Teele Square in Somerville. As I was reading this I felt like you were describing almost exactly what happened to me. I was riding at legal speed but probably a bit too fast and too close to parked cars on my right but the person turning left onto Broadway was totally focused on a car that had yielded to allow for a left turn entry and never looked back to the left in my direction. So as in your case we both held some responsibility for the incident. Also I dated a woman with bulimia in the mid 80s. Spent visiting hours on one Valentines Day in the Domitilla ward of Methodist hospital at the Mayo Clinic. I still have a handmade card from that visit.

You're the ideal driver in such an accident: stops, offers help (repeatedly), gets resources, self-inspects, and more. (I've been knocked off my road bike.) Thanks (as always) for your transparency, candor, and ability to comment here.
